Robert C. Gross

Robert C. Gross graduated from Utah State University in 1972, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science. He then received a Juris Doctorate degree from the Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law in 1979. In 1988, he was an Honors Graduate and a Library Scholar of the Pacific Coast Banking School at the University of Washington.

After receiving his law degree, Mr. Gross was named General Counsel for FMA Financial Corporation and its leasing company, trust and thrift and loan affiliates. In 1984, he was named Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Continental Bank & Trust and, in 1986, of First Interstate Bank of Utah, N.A., where he also served on the Senior Executive Committee. In 1990, Mr. Gross was named Executive Vice President of Retail Banking of First Interstate Bank of Utah and was later named and served as its President and Chair of the Executive Board of Directors from 1991 through March 1996. Mr. Gross also served on the Utah Bankers Association Board of Directors and as the Utah delegate to the American Bankers Association Government Relations Council.

In 1996, Utah Governor Michael O. Leavitt named Mr. Gross as the founding Executive Director of the Utah Department of Workforce Services, where he led what became a nationally recognized streamlined and innovative one-stop deliverer of employment and job training services, unemployment insurance, and other critical temporary family support services. During the last two years of his tenure, Mr. Gross was elected president of the National Association of Workforce Service, headquartered in Washington D.C.

In late 2003, Mr. Gross was named by the White House as a Senior Advisor to the Iraq Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs in Baghdad, where he served for six months as an executive member of the Coalition Provisional Authority. Upon transition of governmental sovereignty by the Coalition to Iraq and his redeployment to the United States, Mr. Gross joined the Salt Lake City law firm of Jones Waldo, where he chaired the Banking Section. In 2006, Mr. Gross was named President, Chief Executive Officer, and Board Member of the Blue Healthcare Bank and, in 2008, founded Robert C. Gross Associates (www.robertcgross.com) a board and leadership advisory service firm. In 2011, Mr. Gross was named Of Counsel to Mackey Price & Mecham. In April 2017, Mr. Gross was named Of Counsel to Mackey Price, LLC. He is a highly trained and widely experienced commercial mediator, and serves as mediator on the panel of Utah ADR Services.

During his legal, business and government service career, Mr. Gross has had extensive experience in public policy; financial services regulatory and compliance matters; consumer and commercial lending and leasing transactions; commercial factoring; asset and debt structuring and restructuring; debt placement; real property and real estate law; commercial and contract transactions; insurance law; complex public policy and commercial mediation; securities law compliance; shareholder matters, proxy contests, business organizational structuring, business planning and strategy, and business sales and divestitures; administrative, regulatory, and legislative law; human resources; healthcare law; nonprofit and trade association planning and governance; and professional services business development.

Mr. Gross is currently serving as President of the National Association of Corporate Directors, Utah Chapter; a director and Chair of the Nominating, Governance and Compensation Committee of Potash Ridge Corporation; President and chair of the Alliance for PEO Electronic Compliance; and a director of the Employers Services Assurance Corporation.

Mr. Gross is active in community affairs. He has served on the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce Board of Governors; the Salt Lake United Way Board of Directors; and as a trustee (and treasurer) of the Utah Opera Company, and the Utah Partners in Education, and numerous civic and community nonprofit boards. He currently serves as Chair of the Utah State University College of Humanities Advisory Board and as a director for the Utah State University Jon M. Huntsman School of Business Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence Founders Board.

Mr. Gross is a member of the Utah State Bar and American Bar Association. He has taught courses in several MBA programs and has lectured on a number of business, legal, leadership, and current events topics.
